Mine water heat potential in Wrexham

Coal Action Network is calling for the UK’s vast mine‑water heat potential to be matched by greater ambition to harness this local, low‑carbon resource for communities. We are mapping areas of high geothermal potential and identifying anchor customers with consistent heat demand.

West Wrexham heat opportunity

Wrexham is the first town identified with significant opportunity. A heat network on the town’s western side could mirror the pioneering scheme in Gateshead, setting a new benchmark for Wales.

Historic mine workings extend from Wrexham’s western edge north to Cefn‑y‑bedd and south to Chirk. The most promising zone lies between the A483 and the railway line, where anchor customers such as the hospital, university, and retail park create a strong economic case for a mine‑water heat network. Mining Remediation Authority maps show “good” and “possible” heat potential across this area with the best prospects beneath the hospital and further south.

Anchor customers

The opportunity to supply clean heat to this district is substantial. Hospitals and universities offer continuous 24/7 demand, ensuring reliable returns on investment. Additional anchor customers include Wrexham AFC’s expanding Racecourse Ground and the Plas Coch retail park.

Around 250 homes positioned between many of these anchor customers could also benefit from connection to a network serving these institutions, with further potential for any possible new housing developments south of the hospital. Homes connected to a network would benefit from cheaper heating bills and would help to lower carbon emissions.
